Joint union statement on asbestos in schools

The first national conference addressing the issue of how to protect children and staff from the dangers of asbestos in schools and colleges is being held on 4 July 2017 at the Hillscourt Conference Centre, Rednal, near Birmingham.

ATL is running a campaign to increase awareness of the danger of asbestos in education buildings.

Exposure to asbestos

Asbestos-related illnesses claim between 3,000 and 4,000 lives each year, mainly from cancers of the lungs and chest linings, caused by breathing in air containing asbestos fibres.

Control of asbestos

It is now illegal to use asbestos in the construction or refurbishment of any premises, yet it is estimated that more than 1.5 million workplace properties still contain some form of asbestos.
