ATL believes that:
- colleges must be accountable for their use of public money
- college leaders and lecturers must be accountable for the work they do with young people and adults who may be getting a second chance at education or developing a vocational career.
It is not the principle of accountability that ATL is contesting; it is the current practice of accountability and its effects on the further education (FE) system.
Some elements of ATL's proposals are challenging. But we believe our proposals will save time and money, as colleges spend inordinate resources on developing their own performance management systems, simply attempting to mirror Ofsted. The time is right to think creatively and to make these changes.
