Use of personal information

ATL is a registered data controller under the Data Protection Act 1998. We are committed to protecting and respecting your privacy, and gather and process data in accordance with the provisions of the Data Protection Act.

On joining ATL, you provide information including details of where you work and live, and how to contact you. ATL uses this information to ensure we carry out our union activities for the benefit of members, particularly to make sure you’re paying the correct subs rate, to share opportunities for you to develop ATL’s policy and support, to tell you about what new advice, CPD and other benefits we or ATL-endorsed partners have created for you, and to ask you to take part in the democratic activities of the union, for example, elections and ballots.

This information is legally regarded as sensitive and, because we hold your details on computerised systems, we ensure high levels of security. This information is also required by law to be kept up to date, so we ask you to let us know about any changes and we allow ATL-endorsed partners to share any updates with us.

Your membership agreement with ATL means we are authorised to process your data. The agreement is a formal statement, issued under data protection legislation, which informs you of the purposes for which we process the information held about you.

Your information will be held for a reasonable period after you leave ATL, mainly for continuity, in case you wish to rejoin or you wish to query an element of your membership, but also to help ATL understand membership trends so we can improve the support we offer members.

Some of your information is available to employees and lay officials of the union (and others formally instructed by ATL for the purposes of carrying out trade union duties), as well as when appropriate, to ATL-endorsed partners who offer union activities such as CPD and member research, or benefits through our ATL Plus range. ATL-endorsed partners are contractually obliged to process your data in a secure and confidential manner under our strict instructions.

We reserve the right to access and disclose individually identifiable information to enable us to comply with applicable laws and lawful Government requests to operate its systems and protect itself or its users.

By joining the union, you agree to our processing your personal information, including sensitive personal information such as trade union membership for the purposes outlined above.

We may contact you at your home (or workplace address if we do not have a valid home address), by telephone or email. Please ensure that your contact details are accurate and amend them as necessary through your ATL website account, or the membership department.

If you do not wish to be contacted in relation to ATL’s products and services, please email ATL's membership team.
